Sorrento, Italy

Sorrento looked beautiful in the setting sun as our taxi emerged from the tunnel through the mountain and descended towards the bay of Naples. We checked into the Hilton Sorrento Palace and spent four days there relaxing by the pool and enjoying nice sunsets and gelato.

The hotel was on the hill overlooking the bay and Mount Vesuvius. Maybe the best breakfast view yet! The old town was just a few minutes walk downhill. The cobbled streets were bustling in the evenings with restaurants, cafes, shops and gelaterias all open for business. It was nice to sit in the main square for an aperitif before dinner watching the world go by.

We took a trip to Positano one afternoon. It was a lovely drive along the Amalfi Coast in a very expensive taxi! We stopped along the way to get a photo of Positano at a viewing spot on the cliff. We had to battle our way through busloads of Japanese tourists to get the photo but the views were worth it!

The taxi dropped us at the top of the town. We walked down the winding cobbled street towards the bay. The street was covered with a trellis with plants growing on it and it looked very pretty. There were lots of tourist shops, mostly selling some lemon themed gifts. We stopped at the church on the way.

The waters edge was lined with restaurants and beach bars. We walked along the boardwalk and then choose a place to have lunch and rest for a bit. It was a lovely spot to watch all the boats on the water while enjoying some pizza and bruschetta with a nice glass of wine.

We got tickets for the ferry back to Sorrento at the port. Then we bought our postcards. The boys have one from everyplace they’ve ever visited- quite a large collection. We sat on the pier and watched all the antics on the water while the boys tried a Positano gelato. Then we caught the ferry back, cheaper than the taxi and it came with superb views of Capri and an amazing sunset too.
